SMITHS CREEK_HUT. On Anniversary Weekend 18 stalwarts (?) worked with a will on our Hut, busying themselves with the finishing touches necessary to prepare it for the opening ceremony. The eighteen:- Phil Phillips (Leader), Cyril Jacquard, Walle Hobbs, Betty Brewster, Des Manning, Joyce Constable, Ian Hindmarsh, John Robinson, Graham Jacobs, David Lowe, Ben Talbot, Ike Smith, Rob Jamieson, Tom Lawton, Inez Bluck, Ione McIntyre, Marie Ballantyne and Terry Moore spent a really enjoyable weekend certainly the best-enjoyed of any of our 14 Hut Working Parties owing to the marvellous weather. Many tales could be told of the fun had on this trip but space does not permit of their inclusion - sufficient to say that we had not enjoyed a trip so much for months. When you read this the Hut will have been officially op* ened on Saturday, February 19th. The full details of the opening will be published in our next issue, the opening coming just too late for this one. The Hut, as yet, is not completely finished. Further work to be done is as follows:- 1. Complete lining of the Hut with 3 ply - we have not as yet, sufficient 3 ply for the whole job. 2. When iron is more freely available cover the roof with iron over the present malthoid and replace the sheets of older iron on the chimney (which incidentally works very well). 3. Paint window sashes, give second coat of bituminous paint to Hut, cover outside of Hut with scrim and paint. 4. Various odd small jobs of touching up and finishing off. 5. Build latrine. A rubbish hole has been dug and after that experience we refused to teckle even the start of the latrine without a pick or better still a. steam shovel! As can be seen, our Hut does need more work done on it yet, but it is in good condition for the opening. Now don't broadcast this, otherwise our Hut may become too popular, but it is a darned good Hut, warm and cosy with (great boon) an excellent fireplace (commonly known as (a) The Guest Room or (b) The Dog House). If you couldn't get in to the opening to see the nearly completed article - come on the next Working Party to see the result of those 14 sweat-oiled weekends. T.M.
