BAINES. Oct. 28/30th. I have for some time held the theory that tramping far on Friday night is in strict variance with my principles,(?? - hadn't heard that you had any. I Ed.) and I also know a young man who will agree with me when I say that one must have one's sleep on Friday night. I find these days that Baines is a long way on Friday, perhaps I'm not so fit as I used to be (Quiet Mr. Editor.) However once you arrive at Baines you needn't go further as you can spend quite a profitable weekend doing nothing (a la "Orongorongo type") but if you are more energetically minded or if you were unfortunate enough to consider the Mat+hews à -Papatahi traverse (in a rash moment of course) you will then find that the leader expects you to up and follow him. Of course you can just lie back and say brazenly and unashamedly that you have decided not to go; in which case those who are going glare darkly and certain unsavoury remarks pollute the air. On the other hand if you happen to be a friend of the leaders you then probably feel it your duty to go on his trip. This latter was my predicament and so I found myself on the way up Matthews with our Leader and Stan, Bill, Max,Jim and Sherley who had arrived at Baines just prior to our departure. The climb up Matthews is actually similar to most other climbs- you just keep going upwards. We lunched An top of Matthews in a cold wind with intermittent rain and we continued with hopes of Papatahi, however the inclement weather was not appreciative of our efforts and we were not long in beating a hasty retreat to Baines. The remainder of the weekend was quite profitably spent, by slothfull standards, in a visit to Trev and Co's. hut, sunbating on Sunday and an exciting game of cricket during which the rubbish tip became a popular hunting grour.d for our cricket balls. We finished our weekend by some going out via the Whakanui and the remainder via Eastbourne. Those on the trip were:- Mary Willett, Susan Fisk, Vi Cameron, Stan Kinder, Graeme Hall, Max Batie, Dick Noble, Dick Archer, Jim Dow, Keith Durrant, Sherley MacDonell, Dave "owe (Leader) and Rod Milne.
