+++ HOLDSWORTH. Aug, 25/27th. The average person might be excused for thinking that Mt. Holdsworth belonged to the W.T.M.C. judging by the way the club took possession of its huts on a certain Friday night. in August.Powell Hut was honoured with the presence of some of Tom Larton's party bound for Jumbo and the Atiwhaka tu Stream which sounds an awful long way. I wouldn't knowo (Hor about a Sunday Holdsworth-Mitre Bill? - Sub.Ed.) My party was only going to Holdsworth so we stayed in Mountain House on Friday complete with built-in draughts and all.
Phil and party who spent the weekend looking for a new site on which to build Mountain House stayed at Bannister that night. It was with great reluctence that my party tore themselves away that night as the new Bannister Hut looked very inviting. However, we had our reward in a perfect tramping night. The Holdsworth-Witre Ridge stood out mantled in snow and lit by the moon with the vhole scene set in a still, clear night. It was good to see the numerous and prominent signposts at all the turn-offs on the track. I suppose Hori's alarm clock woke most people on Saturday but it was the smell of food that finally brought me back to consciousness. It was a beautiful norning and werwere soon up and away to Powell, arriving about 10 o'clock. After a short rest the party set out for the summit, some to ski and some to spend the day sliding down the mountainside on things slightly broader than ski. It was a perfect day and I think everyone enjoyed it to the utmost. Arriving back at the hut we found Phil had dropped in to pay a social call. Apperentlythe quest for a new hut site had been successful. We very cunningly waited until Phil had gone before bringing out any of our food and having tea. Sunday dawned fine but during the morning, mist and a Bible Class arrived. Titch and Barbara had one sensational ride on the toboggan and then left for Bannister by dropping down into the Atiwhakatu and following the stream out. The lions were fed about 2.30p.m. : 1: after which we left for BennisterHut but not before I had stuck my head out of the door, shouted "Backs" and still managed to half-drown 3 menbers of the Bible ciass with half a cup of tea. They looked rather surprised. Holdsworth seened a popular place that Sunday. People of all agges fron O to 50 were strung out along the track and the Motor Camp, for once, looked like a Motor Camp. With people all over the place changing became quite a problem. We left the Motor Camp about 5,00 and after a short stop in Featherston arrived back in Wellington at 8p.m. On the trip were:- Titch Graham, Pam Skelton, Diana Collings, George Horwood, Graeme Hall, Barbara Bartiey, Snow W illiams, P. Beveridge, J. Craige, Frank McGowan, Denis Allison, Barrie O'Donnell, Dick Noble, Ellen Slattery, Paul Phillips and Bill Rice (Leader.) W.H.R.
