KAIKOURAS - EASTER '54. Party:-Leigh Hart (Leader) Dave Catchpole, Otto Johanson, Owen Richardson, George Thompson, "Nuts" Bolt, Thurs. 15th.April- We boarded the "Tamahine", well equipped, trying to look like climbers - as distinct from the Sounds picnic parties. Friday 16th. All tumbled off the boat (ship?) at 4 a.m. into the back of a waiting truck on Picton Wharf, thence to Blenheim for breakfast and on to the Hodder Bridge in the Awatere valley by 8 a,m. We had now forced on us, one McCallum, leading four Tararuas ('nuff said). After crossing and recrossing the Hodder all day we finally pitched camp under the last tree in the valley, had tea, crawled into the sacks and promptly died, Saturday 17th. - Up and away by 5 a.m. to catch the Tararuas still in bedwe managed to bludge some food off them before they really woke up. This was considered the outstanding achicvement of the trip. We then climbed Mt.Alarm (9400') taking care to replace all handholds, and were back in camp again by 4 p.m. Sunday 18th. Tapuaenuku was the target for today but the dawn weather prospects weren't too promising So we packed up and moved off down the valley to Shin Hut. By midday the weat ther was perfect and we regretted not being on top. Dave and Owen gave vent to their wrat th by blasting off all their ammunition at the goats, George and Otto shot off colour film, while Leigh and "Nuts" went geologizing and gavo boost to the erosion cycle. Monday 19th. After a night of glorious Shin Hut fug we wandered out to the road, the truck, and so back to Picton to find a eertain amount of bottled lunch with fish and chips to taste. At Picton we again met the Social Club, looking completely exhausted and generally debauched after. their weck end fishing, And so, focling"refroshed with mountain air" we crammed back onto the "Tam" and returned to the big smoke. "Nuts"
