WOODSIDE - WALLS = WATOHINE = Octobor 2=3 Due to lack of support the scheduled working party to Walls Whare did not run, but this did not deter four FIT KEEN trampers from setting out on a trip which could have been termed a working party, if any work had been done on ito The party set out from Woodside Station on the Saturday morning at 106'clock being three in number, but we also found Hugh Talbot to be on the Railcar and since he assured us that he was carrying lots of food we decided that he could join us (if he behaved himself). We whizzed past Walls ? in about forty minutes and reached the cage at 12.30 p.m. just in time for lunch when we discovered that Hugh's stories concerning his food supplies were not strictly correct - as he had enough food for himself 1 but nothing left for usd As he had come in so far it was thought best that he stay with us as his extensive knowledge of bushcraft would be just as useful as his foods After about five hours struggling through almost impenetrable jungle the four FIT KEEN trampers reached Totara Flats at 5.30 pome in a state of complete exhaustion (well the writer was) and by now not so keen. However, after tea we felt a little better, in fact quite a lot better and this moved us to try our hand at purging the hut of friend rate This proved rather a dangerous game and the hazardous risk of fire put a stop to our Saturday night's entertainmente Sunday morning and we awoke to the sound of rain - so promptly died again, However upon waking yet a second time it was still raining but since time was getting on we decided we had better do something about it and proceeded to cook breakfast and tuck that awayo We departed about 9.30 am calling in at Sayers via Totara Flats and the river. At Sayers we found two shooters and three dogs - the former informing us that the trip out via Pig Flats and Bannister would take at least five hours! Our party however started up the track from Sayers about 10,20 am and after playing hide and seek with said track reached the top at 11,50 amo After lunch we commenced the"going down 11 part keeping up a good pace as the track was well defined. Abour half way down we reached a fork and then there began quite a lengthy discussion during which Hugh (Bushoraft) Talbot informed us that it would be FATAL to take the left branch because he had done thab some months ago with a T.T,C. party and got BUSHED! Ted (Busbbraft) Dakin climbed a tree to find our bearings, but all he could see was more treess After a long last we decided to take the right branch (of the fork) not the tree and descended rapidlyo However the track disappeared and there was nothing but supplejack, windfalls and lawyer and etco etcs After an hour of this we grew rather tired and dropped into the Kaipatangata Stream, This made the "going down" much easier having no waterfalls and very few log jambs, but, I might add, not,as gasy as if we had taken the RIGHT track (not the right branch) and ignored Hugh' s adviceo A herd of five goats was discovered about an hour down the creek, but as we had no cannon (nor Tom Meyer) with us we ambled on treating them with ignore (although Jack tried out his axe),

Two hours downstream and we reached the road and a further two hours road walk brought us to Carterton, As all our'offers of accepting lifts were declined by motorists we had to walk the whole way which practically killed us well, the writer anyway), but we made the rail car. Party - Ted Dakin, Hugh (Bushcraft) Talbot, Jack Whatsitt, J.Armstrong. John -
