Our esteemed leader, Mike Hollis, takus up this tale: Lots of virgin snow, fine weather, no tow queues, views cf Egmont, Ruapehu, the Kaikouras, - and gluhwein. With these promises, Pickles enveigled me into a skiing trip to Kime. I envisaged a walk up, some runs off Fields and dector, and a long run cown from Bridge Peak to Table Top. The road walk was the usual grind. The, skis and boots on tcp of a weekend pack gotheavier and heavier. At Otaki Forks I realised that there was no way I: could get up the hill. My cloth (a pack) was cut accordingly. The skis and boots were hidden in the bush. It was to be a tramp. This was a bit of a let down for I had carried the same gear to Mt. Robert a but that was some years ago. The weather was cold but Table Top was devoid of-snow. No snow on the ground at Dennan, but definitely snow in the air. The snow-line was eventually reached just before Kime. - Inside Kime the FE party lay piking. I got several billies of water and, deciding that my share of the work was done, retired to the pit. (Had cooked my stew at home). Stayea in the'pit until next morning except for occasional visits to the'loo. - I. strange place that, with no door and a roof so low that I had to decide to bend at the knees or bend the head, or botha The logical way is to sit down, but males seem to be averse tO chis : Next morning Mark - and Mark climbed Fields and skied down, playing dodgems between the clumps of snow grass. I had bne run on Pickles' skis. His feet are bigger than mine. 1 began a turn, but all that happened was my foot turned in the boot. Quite a sensation ski in one direction and body in another! The trip began with three Marksand a Mike, but elevations from the Medium trip.and defections from the FE Southern swelled the numbers. E.. au nf Well, what promises did the leacer: deliver the gluhwein, that was good, and about one. hour of. sunshine's But we enjoyed it all. Mike Hollis
