Late Thursday evening (or was it' morning?) we arrived at: the shelter dinnst. Arnaud. From where on Friday, after a leisurely breakfast, EN. weigot. the boat up Lake Rotoiti to Lake Head Hut:: A pleasant walk up Travers. river took. us' to our next campsite, where Annette and Jenny went for a VERY, quick swim. sw : : : Es waking next day we found the weather was not so hot and after a: climb to- Hopeless Hut we decided on a wait and see policy regards the weather. We eventually stayed the night. The hut was rather crowded - 14. people and 10 bunks (3'in the'woodshed). Wes sat. around the table most of the evening playing euchre and chatting to Annette's harmonica. ARrs Next day it was an early start, following Hopeless Creek as far as possible then up this never-ending scree slope. What a relief: to reach the tarn - a relief for some. Dave Gilroy left the tent poles back at.Hopeless and went back down. to get them. Then more wt rock-hopping. As my watch beeps 12.00 I reach- Sunset- Saddle (at last) - the conqueror! : It.was downhill to Lake Angelus where/we. stopped for lunch and met more Tongue & Meats: (F.E's). Then it. was along Robert Ridge to just past Julius Tarns where we camped by an unmarked tarn. The wind was really gusty during the night and like others before me I plotted my escape should we blow away. But we survived more-or-less Then it was back to. Robert intact." up Ridge, past the skifield and some beautiful views, down the zig-zag (15 zigs and 15 to : zags) the car park where we began our road. walk back to the shelter, the bus; and home.
