Friday night saw the party of séven grovelling up the Ohau River enroute for South Ohau Hut.. With the Trip Leader still not disclosing the Trip's destination, we set off the next morning around 7am and headed up the Ohau River. After awhile the river turned into a creek and we realised that we were not where we were meant to be. After some back-tracking, some mapreading, some confusion and some more map reading we eventually found the track. : Over Girdlestone Saddle (?) and down into the Mangahao where we stopped for an early lunch. Then up a spur onto Triangle Knob and up again onto Dundas Ridge. The weather was mainly fine and calm as we wandered along towards Arete. once on Arete we could see Mt Egmont poking out of a thick layer of cloud that was spread out below us. We arrived at Te Matawai Hut just as it was getting dark, The Fit Trip were there and after a great meal cookèd by Kev everyone hit the pit. Next morning we headed down into Butcher's Saddle, over Richard's Knob and then scrambled through another saddle (this one packed with leatherwood) and up onto Twin Peak. From there it was onto Waiopehu Peak and down to Waiopehu Hut for lunch. A sunny afternoon stroll out from the Hut finished off a really enjoyable weekend. On the trip were: Kev Thompson (leader), Eric Evans; Paul Bolger, Peter Hodge, Mike Kennelly, Mat Comeskey, Greg Ord (Scribe).
