Kirsty Woods This is just a modest little plug for a new group called "Women in Climbing" which is made up of women from all sorts. of clubs and other strange places - yes, take stock all you women who have "always wanted. to do it but were afraid to ask!" October 11-13, a group, of four women stomped over a section of the seaward Kaikoura Range concentrating on the highest peak', Manukau. On the Friday, we walked up the Hapuku River to a spot where we made a base campi a place where we felt that "no woman had been before". 5.30am Saturday we worked our way up crumbly rocky Surveyor Spur and then split into two parties. One lot plodded through the snow to the top-of Manukau: and back - a. gruelling 15 hour effort which could not eliminate the feelings of exhilaration at having done the whole trip andin glorious weather. (And we've got photos to prove it!) The other lot spent the day stripping off and sunbathing (we've got the photos to prove that too!) and flying kites. They were also.the great comforters for the rather worn out but hysterical summit party that evening. VhA We had a""relaxed" walk out on Sunday and ate and drank our way back to Wellington ina haze of self satisfaction. Those on the trip weres Dale. Parsons, Kirsty. Woods, Jan Nisbet and Marion Davies.
