Craigie Garton : This year instéad of talking toadstools we decided to view some at close range. Rumours were rife that Nelson Lakes was the place to go, so off we went. Thus began the Great Toadstool Trek: II: We camped beside Lake Rotoroa only to find a :GasrA "No Camping' sign staring blatantly at us when ar we awoke. Alack, Alas and all those other woeful sayings. A Jetboat ride across the lake (helicopters are too expensive and conveyer belts have not been installed as yet) was followed by a slow exciting trip alongside the Sabine River; accompanied by shouts of, "Come back here and see this". We discoveréi many different tosdstools varying in colour, size, and shape as toadstools, and indeed most things, tend to do. Stanley Gartonelli, our resident photographer. dutifully recorded the aforesaid on film for hi is latest book, "Fungis I have Known". I pointed out to him that the photo : of Jaçk MCConchie must have found its way there by mistake, after which hè promptly removed it. Our resident safety expert,Roslyn McDonald, put forward a motion that packs be fitted with brake lights and indicators, to prevent a : MJM Way recurrence of the tragic twelve pack pile-up. This was caused by an impatient young male tramper I overtaking on a dangerous corner and then braking suddenly, causing a mild pack-to-pack.craah, At one stage, it. was thought Craigieand Roslyn might need the' "Jaws of Life"to extract them, but they. were eventually freed without injury. Onward into the unknown; and a campsite just up from the West Sabine Hut that, cheered us up after a ratheriwet walk. ca: i Saburday's pleasant. although somewhat steep. climb up to Blue Lake was in honour of Chris Garton's birthday. Any guesses at age? Winners will be announced in the next Newsletter. Jerome Barker passed his firelighting apprenticeship under J iu: the watchful eye of Dave Shepherd, and between the two,we had lovely warm fires despite the rain. A leisurely stroll took us downstream to. a
campsite with friendly Robins and sandflies vying for our attention." Sandflies were duly despatched, courtesy of Dimp, and Robine photographed by a few Japanese Tourists among us. The time came to lenve Lake Rotorca,- and the bus got stuck in a ditch. So we huffed and puffed, and buffed and puffed, then called in a truck first and then a tractor, both of which huffed and puffed and eventually pulled us free. First Prize Fer Enthusiasm goes to Rose Feeney for taking photos of her ears and other facial features whilst pretending to photograph waterfalls and other less scenic attractions. (How: did she do: it?) : A Toadstool Tourers were: : Chris: and Craigie Gartonelli, Marie Nickel, Sabina Musch, Jeremy Barker, Ross Morley, Ros McDonald, Rose: Feeneyz Ian: Griffithe, Dave Shepherd, Peter Chappell, Louis Bernath.
