RUAPEHU. Dennis O'Neill, leader of the ski-ing trip to the Chateau side of Ruapehu on Kings Birthday Weekend has given me the write-up a.s printed below. Seemsto me they might have hrd a bit more fun round et 'Kune side with us - but of course they won't believe that. - Ed. 'Twas off to Ruepehu, The Chateau side, to ski. They squeezed us all into a truck A score or so were we. ie talked of all the fun we'd have, 2-skimming down snow slopes, But we were yet to find our dreams were built on hopes. The truck droned ever onward, The walls they groaned end shook, And some were frightened into fits, As each bend the truck she took. So after many weary hours of bumping in the dark We were quite surprised to find ourselves arrived at National Park.
This was about the fourth hour While the stars still gave their light So we prepared to snatch some sleep For there was little had that night. Said one young man PS a longing gaze at the gleeming peak he took, "That mountain has a nice 'como-up-and-ski-mot look." Bright and early in the morning The hire of skis a must, We learned from Snowy Mace, "No gos There is an icy crust." As you may guess we felt quite disappointed by this time, But set off, some to take a welk and some of us to climb. The day it was eventful Te slipped, we slid, we fell. The weather up above thosc clouds I'm glad to say was swell. And some of us werg lucky, on skis (unexpected though) To have a few short practise runs on freshly shovelled snow. Then came Saturday evening Good heavens! What a row, There must have been a party there, We can't remember now. But the terrible earthquake that shook at the Lodge, making a. fearful sound Was only a driver in a hurry, suddenly turning round. We moved off on the Monday, I think that we were pleased, Because we all thought just one thing, The snow, it was diseased. We couldn't complain, we'd had a good time (and some a needed rest) So please take note as regards mountain trips, the skiing ones are the best. Postcript. We met them in Taihape, The Alpine Instruction clan, And the jeers about our skating on ice Would hurt any ski-er mano But we had such comforts as contral heating with us the whole weckend, While they their idle hours in cold Blythe Hut were forced to spend.
