MITRE After an abortive Christmas, four Tongue and Meats - Bill Barker, Richard and Eric Thun, Nick Jennings - had a magnificent weekend discovering new waterfalls, meeting strangely unconcerned goats and stags, exploring strange creeks and negdiating new country IN THE SUN around Mitre. Had a good campsite too. On Sunday Bill and Richard went on to Te Matawai and out at Ohau during the next few days while Eric and Nick went out early back to the car at the Pines as the low cloud discouraged the possible gorge travel. The party also experimented with a new scientific diet which was generally successful. ANNIVERSARY WEEKEND Bill Barker, Richard Thum, Nick Jennings. TUT i Totally unnecessary trip 1200' i a long way to climb Left Otaki Forks Friday evening and sp ent night at Fields. With weather gradually clearing went up to Vossler and along the Main Range to Pakihori Ridge. Had lunch at the bushedge tarns and then dropped down into Whatiuru Creek and down that past the fly camp to camp at the junction of Whatiuru and Aokaparangi Stream. Had a look down towards Otaki, ate a traditional rice plus everything plus coleslaw dinner and retired. On Sunday went up Aokaparangi Stream to major forks and then to Aokaparangi. A bit windy on the way along to Maungahuka which was pleasant shelter for lunch. Descended to Hector River via upstream a branch of Meatsafe spur and then down to Neill forks to camp for the night. A very pleasant and relaxing evening with a traditional dehy type meal. On Monday went straight up to Neill in glorious sun and stopped to take on spter at Winchcombe bivvy. Then another brew stop at Vossler before goiag out to the Forks. A very enjoyable.weckend which.pleasantly exercised bushcraft skills and got us thoroughly sunburnt.
