THE LOCKETT RANGE
On the tops in Kahurangi National Park by ED JERNELL
Fancy a nice walk along the tops of a mountain range with open grass, rocky peaks, many idyllic lakes and stunning views in all directions? Well Kahurangi National Park may just be the place for you. We went there and we found the Lockett Range to be just the ticket for a two-day wander.
We started up the track to Sylvester Hut late in the afternoon and camped for the night at Lake Sylvester.
Next morning we climbed to the tops and for the remainder of the day travelled along the ridge and over Mt Benson to a small tarn above Fenella Hut. We camped here in the shelter of the beech forest to be harassed by marauding wekas who stole anything lying about and then cleaned out the remaining crumbs in Jackie’s bowl. On the final day we strolled down the Cobb Valley. Here are some of our photographs.
