A CROSS IS CARRIED. ALMOST to the day, after a year of silence, two deer stalkers, homeward bound from the hills, took the wrong ridge from Mt. Kaiparero and walked on to the ill-fated Airspeed Oxford 'plane, which was lost on a return flight from Masterton to Ohakea ( about 40 minutes flying time.) Although the soarch was carriod 2660' on for a wook, on land and in the air, as far North as Hastings * Kaiparoro and as far South as Lake Pallisor, no sign wo.s found. / Makakohi Rivor It is hard to. conceivo thet a planc of this size would be Wtersdpply Res reduced to matchwood and tanglod steol. A small Totara treo about 12 foot in diameter Tawhero 3218' was cut cloan off and ono ongino was lying about 150 yards down the hill, à the othor to become wodgod A so Alnn in botween two treos. 2047' Runmnhangn The Pilot had evidontly - been flung through the windscreon Roof64611 of the cockpit and was lying about a chnin down hill, whilst the tail assembly hung in a tree about 40 feot from the ground. A party from Masterton, consisting of the Police, a Boctor and a Chaplain, nlso an Enginoor from Ohakea ( this party to give evidenco at an onquiry) accompnnied by the Y.M.C.A. Tramping Club visited tho secene of disaster and buriod the remains of the Pilot.

After permission being granted by his next of kin, and the Minister of Intornal Affairs, his Comrades at Ohakea made a. eross, suitably inscribed. This was of duralium, 3 feet in height and weighing about 12 pounds. It was taken in by the Y.M.C.A. Tramping Club in February of this year and placed in position. a : Whilst this areo is in the foothills of the Tararuas, it is not very often visited by Trampers and would be well worth benring in mind for a. new and interosting trip in the near future. A visit could be made to the 'plano and then comp could be made at the Ruamhanga. River therefore Spring and Summer are th most suitable months. The truck could be picked up on the homewood trip at the Bridge (near Mt. Bruce.) This would appeal to all trampers, as it could be an easy or modernte trip, or maybe even F.E! Kaiparoro itself is a tussock clearing about 70- 80 acres at a hoight of nearly 3,000 feet. The turn off at the road, the other side of Mt. Bruce is known as aterworks Rd. and there are plenty of spots for good camp sitos. See Tararua Mop for details, T. Eslor.
